Dr. Jihna Jenkins, an Associate Professor of Business, has recently become the first person of color to be appointed Chair for William Penn University. Not only is she the first person of color, but she also shares the title of first female Business Division Chair with Dr. Crull. This historic appointment marks a significant milestone for the university and serves as a beacon of inspiration for students and faculty alike.
Dr. Jenkins’ journey into academia was serendipitous. While working full-time at an accounting firm during her undergraduate studies, a spiritual gifts assessment highlighted teaching as her highest gift. Despite initial reservations, her natural talent for simplifying complex concepts led her to embrace teaching, eventually becoming an adjunct faculty member at WPU in 2009. Her commitment and excellence propelled her through the ranks to her current position.
Reflecting on the impact of her appointment, Dr. Jenkins emphasizes the importance of representation. “For students and faculty of color, this provides a blueprint. We build community brick by brick,” she says, highlighting the transformational change her role signifies. However, the journey to get to this point has not been without its challenges. Dr. Jenkins acknowledges the hurdles of navigating academia as a minority but remains steadfast in her resolve. “I will vocalize my needs as a woman and person of color. Leadership roles are different for us, and I embrace my uniqueness,” she asserts.
Dr. Jenkins is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment at WPU. By tailoring her work with the BIPOC+ Coalition to the Business Division, she aims to create measurable strategies, promote professional development, and cultivate a collaborative culture. “I am committed to being a voice and advocate for productive change,” she affirms. Looking ahead, Dr. Jenkins aspires to lead WPU into a transformative future. “I want the Business Division to be an example of intentional transformation,” she shares, with personal ambitions of becoming the first woman of color to be awarded tenure in the university’s history.
Dr. Jenkins’ leadership and vision are poised to make a lasting impact, paving the way for future generations of scholars and leaders at William Penn University.
