Humanist to Present ‘The Wonder of Thinking at All’ During Leaders Speak Series
03/01/2017
Director of the Center for Humanist Inquiries, Daniel Boscaljon, will present “The Wonder of Thinking at All” on Tuesday, March 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the Musco Technology Center on William Penn University’s Oskaloosa campus. Boscaljon’s discussion will look at the way that wonder is able to transform humans’ relationship with the world by becoming more attentive to what is overlooked as ordinary. Ranging from philosophy to pop culture, this presentation will provide concrete steps towards becoming a more critical and creative thinker.
“Sometimes we all need to just take a moment to ponder, and this presentation will challenge us to take time to reflect and explore our creative potential,” said Matt Wagner, Director of the Digital Communication program at William Penn University.
In 2009, Boscaljon received a Ph.D. in Religious Studies with a focus on modern religious thought and post secular theology and also received a Ph.D. in English in 2013 with a focus on nineteenth-century American Literature. Boscaljon’s interest in kindling an awareness of wonder and “awe” in the everyday world, first displayed in his book, Vigilant Faith, has grown in his work with the Center for Humanist Inquiries (CHI) and his involvement with “thesacredprofane” podcast. Currently, Boscaljon teaches at both University of Iowa and Cornell College in addition to his work with CHI and the local arts community. Boscaljon is also working on his second book, Gothic Haunts, which will be published in 2017.
The Leaders Speak Series is an annual initiative that reaches out to the community with diverse leadership-based themes. This spring there are three scheduled speakers that will expand on this year’s theme: “Regenerate: planting ideas for generations.” The theme focuses on motivating students and community members to become more active and be a part of the changes they want to see, whether that is in their own lives or in the community.
