William Penn University Students Gain Real-World Filmmaking Experience with ‘Winter Harvest’

William Penn University’s New Media students have been given an extraordinary opportunity to take part in the professional filmmaking process, thanks to Professor Max Leonida and his feature film, Winter Harvest. The film, based on the 1981 kidnapping and rescue of U.S. General James L. Dozier, has provided students with hands-on experience in both the production and post-production phases, giving them invaluable insight into the industry.

Leonida, a seasoned filmmaker and professor, has long envisioned producing a feature film in Iowa, a state not typically known for major film productions. According to him, the honesty of the people, the scenic landscape, and the availability of resources made it an ideal location for parts of Winter Harvest. William Penn University itself served as a key filming location, offering a challenging yet rewarding backdrop for production.

“Filming on campus was both convenient and demanding,” Leonida shared. “We had to ensure minimal disruption to daily academic life, which required careful coordination.”

While Iowa played a significant role in the film’s production, Winter Harvest also took the team overseas to Verona and Padova, Italy, where the real-life events took place. This shift not only enhanced the film’s authenticity but also allowed students to experience international filmmaking firsthand. “You simply can’t recreate the look and feel of Italy in the U.S., no matter how skilled the set designers are,” Leonida noted.

From pre-production to filming and editing, students played a crucial role in bringing Winter Harvest to life. Select William Penn student interns, took on key roles such as script supervision, set videography, and costume design assistance. Brooke Richardson, William Campbell, and Abbey Danowski were among those who left a lasting impression on Leonida with their professionalism and dedication.

Leonida recalled a standout moment when Richardson, serving as the script supervisor, caught a continuity error before filming began. “She noticed details that even experienced professionals missed. That level of commitment was truly impressive.”

The students’ involvement didn’t end with production. They are now actively contributing to post-production by assisting with editing discussions and technical work on Adobe Premiere Pro. “Editing isn’t just about keeping the good shots and discarding the bad ones,” Leonida emphasized. “It’s about storytelling, emotion, and vision.”

One of the most significant takeaways for students involved in Winter Harvest was the real-world exposure it provided. In Italy, they worked alongside A-list Hollywood actors, renowned crew members, and top-tier equipment, such as the ARRI Alexa LF camera—technology rarely accessible to any collegiate student.

Leonida firmly believes that hands-on experiences like this are crucial to a student’s education. “Academia shouldn’t be confined to theory. Real-world experience is essential to preparing students for their careers.”

The film’s production has also highlighted the unique opportunities available at William Penn University, particularly in its New Media program. “There isn’t another university in the world that would entrust students with such high-end filmmaking equipment,” Leonida stated. “That’s the level of trust we have here.”

With post-production in full swing, the team is aiming for a final cut by May 2025, with hopes of premiering at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival. Following its festival debut, Winter Harvest is expected to have a theatrical release in Fall 2025.

Reflecting on the project, Leonida takes great pride in having transformed an idea into a feature-length film. “In Hollywood, only a small percentage of scripts ever make it to production. To see this film come to life, with the help of my students, is incredibly fulfilling.”
