William Penn University Welcomes New Faculty Members, Strengthening Academic and Creative Excellence

08/26/2024

William Penn University is proud to announce the addition of several new faculty members, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to their respective fields. This strategic expansion reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the educational experience for its students.

Dean Noel Stahle emphasized the importance of selecting faculty, stating, “Over the last several years, we have been very intentional and deliberate about hiring colleagues who are not only highly credentialed but also focused, creative, and inspired teachers. The culture of our academic team has evolved, driven by a shared commitment to ensuring that students have a meaningful learning experience.” Stahle noted that approximately 50% of the faculty has changed in recent years, primarily due to retirements, marking a significant transformation in the university’s academic landscape.

Among the new additions is Haluk Kucuk, who joins the faculty as the Associate Professor of the Engineering Program. With many years of experience in the field, Kucuk is poised to rebuild the Engineering Program, an initiative Dean Stahle sees as vital to the university’s future. “Haluk’s extensive background is exactly what we need to guide our students and ensure their success, especially as they transition to Iowa State through our 3+2 Engineering Program,” Stahle stated. Kucuk’s ability to forge strong connections with students will be key in helping them navigate their academic and professional journeys.

Javin Sword, the new Instructor of Computer Science, comes to William Penn University after a distinguished career as Vice President at Wells Fargo. Sword has been an adjunct professor at the university for several years, but now he fully transitions into academia with a passion for giving back to students. “He could still be at Wells Fargo earning the big bucks, but has transitioned his life to make a difference. That is so William Penn,” Stahle remarked.

Sword will also lead the university’s initiative on generative AI, focusing on the human use of this technology as a tool. He brings with him the experience of starting a similar initiative at Wells Fargo, which will undoubtedly benefit the William Penn community.

Dr. Denis Zavalishin, Associate Professor of Mathematics, joins William Penn from Houston, Texas, bringing an impressive background as a physicist and mechanical engineer from Russia. Dr. Zavalishin has worked on significant Russian projects, including the Russian contribution to the International Space Station. However, his true passion lies in teaching.

“At his soul, he is a developmental educator—how do I help students learn to understand and love math?” Stahle said. Dr. Zavalishin’s decision to join William Penn was solidified during his visit to Oskaloosa, where he found the community to be exceptionally welcoming.

James DePrizio, the new Director of Athletic Bands, brings decades of experience in music education to William Penn. Known for his ability to produce high-quality bands, DePrizio is expected to significantly enhance the university’s Athletic Band Program. His recruitment efforts will focus on strengthening local high school band programs, thereby creating a pipeline of talented musicians to William Penn.

“I am excited that Jim DePrizio has joined the William Penn team as the Director of Athletic Bands. He brings decades of experience in producing quality bands and with that has many connections around the state,” said Kerra Strong, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Institutional Research.

Dr. Lenore Maybaum, Professor of English, transitions to William Penn from Kirkwood College. Her extensive experience in writing workshops sets her apart, as she is poised to foster creativity in students while providing effective guidance. Dr. Maybaum’s approach will undoubtedly enrich the university’s English Department.

Amy Andreassen, the new Instructor of Education, joins the faculty after serving as a principal at English Valley. Known for her dedication to her students, Andreassen is committed to making each student feel seen and heard, ensuring that they receive the support they need to succeed.

With these new hires, William Penn University is not only broadening its curriculum but also internationalizing its faculty. The university aims to create representation, provide a quality education, and equip students with transferable skills that go beyond major-specific knowledge. The future of William Penn University is indeed bright, with a renewed focus on enhancing the student experience and fostering a dynamic academic environment.
