Justin Martin began his William Penn University journey in the fall of 2021, embarking on a path that would not only shape his academic pursuits but also transform him personally. A Business Management major, Justin chose his field of study with the determination to build a solid foundation for his future. Now in his fourth year, he reflects on how much he has grown since stepping onto campus. “I’ve really opened up to doing new things and not being closed-minded,” he shares, emphasizing the personal growth that has defined his experience.
For Justin, adjusting to the cold Iowa winters was an unexpected challenge. “I was told it was going to be cold, but I didn’t think it would be this cold,” he laughs. Yet, beyond the weather, his time at William Penn has taught him perseverance and adaptability. “I’ve learned not to stress as much about projects or work. The professors are incredibly helpful, and they remind you that you have more time than you think to get things done.”
A moment of recognition came when his professor, Darrell Mackaig (Student Success Program Director), nominated him for this feature story—a clear indicator of the positive impression Justin has left on his community. “It made me realize just how much I’ve grown,” he says. This growth is evident in the strong relationships he’s built with classmates and professors alike. “I still keep in touch with friends from freshman year, and the professors I’ve built relationships with have helped shape who I am today. I’m very thankful for that.”
Taking on a full schedule of classes was one of the challenges that pushed Justin out of his comfort zone. “I was always told to get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” he notes, a mindset that has helped him navigate his academic journey. Through it all, the William Penn community has provided unwavering support. “The turnout we get at every football game is incredible. Even though it’s a smaller community, the atmosphere feels big and full of love.”
Balancing academics, personal life, and social commitments hasn’t always been easy, but Justin has found his rhythm. “It took me longer than I’d like, but I think I’ve got the hang of it now.” This balance has helped him redefine his approach to success. “It used to be just skating by, but now it’s about excelling in what I do.”
Looking back, Justin has valuable advice for his freshman self: “Don’t give up. Times are hard, but you’ve been through worse. It may take some time, but see it through and remember why you started.”
As Justin prepares for the next chapter of his journey, he carries with him the lessons, relationships, and experiences that have shaped his time at William Penn University. His story is a testament to the transformative power of determination, support, and community.
